NC-v4 EQc5:Thermal comfort

Thermal comfort - individual Occupancy – LEED Credit Consideration

Hello,

I’m looking for some clarification on occupancy classification for a project. Since we don’t have traditional individual occupancy spaces (like private offices )most areas are server halls or multi occupant spaces or service rooms.

I’m wondering:

  1. Does the absence of individual occupant spaces affect the compliance of  thermal comfort control requirements?
  2. Could providing thermal comfort control in multi-occupant spaces be enough to satisfy the intent of the thermal comfort credit, or is there a recommended approach for this scenario?

Would love to hear if you have approached this in any of your LEED projects.

Hi Jayaprakash, you're on the right track here. This section of the credit language should guide you in the right direction on multi-occupant spaces:"Provide individual thermal comfort controls for at least 50% of individual occupant spaces. Provide group thermal comfort controls for all shared multioccupant spaces, and for any individual occupant spaces without individual controls. "

If you don't have individual spaces, I believe you can still apply for this credit if you meet the requirements for the multi-occupant spaces. The indiv space requirements just don't apply. If you have a credit where the majority of requirements don't apply (or none apply), the answer is usually that it's just not an option for your credit to pursue.
